One dead and five injured
ALPHANEWSLIVE

A section of a tunnel collapsed at Egypt’s largest gold mine, killing one worker and injuring five of his colleagues, authorities announced; Work in the area where the accident occurred has been suspended pending the results of an investigation.

The accident occurred “inside a tunnel, in an underground mining section” at the Sukari gold mine, in the southeastern part of the most populous Arab country, the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum explained in a statement.

This mine produces approximately 500,000 ounces of gold per year. The operation therefore contributes hundreds of millions of dollars to the Egyptian economy annually.

It is also considered a flagship project for the government of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who aims to develop the mining sector and attract foreign investors.

The injured were transported to a hospital in the resort town of Marsa Alam, on the Red Sea coast. Their condition is stable, according to the ministry.

Oil Minister Karim Badawi ordered the formation of a committee to investigate the causes of the collapse, review health and safety procedures at the worksite, and recommend measures to prevent such accidents, according to a statement from his office.

Located approximately 30 kilometers southwest of Marsa Alam, the mine is operated by a company known as Sukari Gold Mines; a joint venture between the Egyptian government and AngloGold Ashanti, which acquired the former operator, Centamin, in 2024.

Accidents in the mining sector are relatively rare in Egypt, where modern mining methods are used, especially at this particular gold mine.
