A fire at a nursing home claimed the lives of 16 residents, the municipality of Pitufken, in the Araucanía region south of Santiago, announced today.
“We express our grief over the deaths of 16 elderly people in this tragedy,” the municipality stated in its announcement.
The fire, the cause of which has not yet been determined, broke out on Friday night, and firefighters managed to bring it under control on Saturday morning, local time.
There were 26 elderly residents at the facility, ten of whom survived and were transported to the city’s hospital, located 640 kilometers from the capital, said Mayor Jacqueline Romero.
Photos posted on social media show massive flames rising from the building. Dozens of firefighters were mobilized.
“We are conducting several investigations (…) primarily to determine the causes of the fire and to rule out the involvement of third parties,” Prosecutor Jorge Granada told local media.
