The number of drowning deaths in France since the start of the heat wave—during which two-thirds of the country is on high alert—has risen to 55, the French government announced today, expressing fears that the toll may rise further.
“Last night (Thursday), we were at 55 (drowning deaths), but we fear the situation will not improve,” French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari told franceinfo TV. More than 51 million people have been facing unbearably high temperatures, prompting them—especially young people—to seek relief by going for a swim, including in dangerous areas or places where there is no supervision.
Ban on Alcohol in Public Spaces in Paris Now in Effect
Paris residents are prohibited from drinking alcohol in public spaces, a measure that took effect at noon on Thursday and remains in effect today, Friday, in an effort by authorities to limit the health problems caused by the heat wave sweeping across France and much of Europe.
“As you know, drinking alcohol while the sun is beating down can have devastating consequences,” said Paris Police Chief Patrice Four on the BFM TV network, explaining the rationale behind the measure.
