The maritime accident in the Bay of Bengal, where the Panama-flagged bulk carrier Ocean Winner sank, is developing into a major search and rescue operation to locate 22 crew members.
A total of 24 crew members were on board the ship. So far, two have been rescued; they were found alive on liferafts, while the search for the remaining crew members continues across a vast area of ocean off the eastern coast of India.
According to the Indian Coast Guard, contact with the Ocean Winner was lost before its sinking was confirmed. The ship was carrying iron ore, but the circumstances under which it was lost remain unknown.
The crew consisted of 20 Chinese nationals, three Myanmar nationals, and one Bangladeshi national. The Indian Coast Guard and Navy are participating in the search and rescue operation, and assistance has been requested from commercial vessels operating in the wider area.
The Ocean Winner sank approximately 240 nautical miles off Parantip, one of the most important ports for the shipment of raw materials in eastern India. The ship had departed from there loaded with iron ore and, according to local reports, was headed for Singapore.
The same sources estimate the cargo’s weight at approximately 72,100 metric tons. However, since conflicting information has been published regarding the cargo and the route, the only thing that has been officially confirmed so far is that the bulk carrier was carrying iron ore.
The Ocean Winner, with IMO number 9145530, was a bulk carrier with a carrying capacity of approximately 72,900 metric tons, built in 1998. The ship’s age and the speed at which the incident appears to have unfolded are expected to be the focus of the investigation, though this does not prejudge the causes of its loss.
So far, there have been no reports of an explosion, collision, or external impact, nor have the relevant authorities linked the sinking to an attack or a maritime security incident. The focus remains on the rescue operation, as every hour that passes reduces the chances of locating survivors.
With 22 sailors still missing, the sinking of the Ocean Winner may turn out to be one of the worst commercial shipping disasters of 2026. The critical question, beyond the fate of the crew, is what happened to a fully loaded bulk carrier that caused communication to be lost and, shortly thereafter, its sinking to be confirmed.
