The Anti-Terrorism Service has taken over the investigation into the fire at the Limoges City Hall, and a suspect was arrested today, an investigative source told AFP.
The suspect, a 40-year-old man, is known for his involvement in the far-left movement and for acts of violence against a public official, and is classified under Category S (a person who may pose a threat to national security), according to the same source.
The 40-year-old is “a suspect in the arson incident” at the 19th-century town hall during the violent clashes that occurred on the sidelines of Saturday’s protests over the cost of living, and was arrested in Limoges, the prosecutor’s office clarified.
On Saturday, protests over the cost of living turned violent in many French cities, including Limoges. Riots broke out in the city center, and rioters stormed City Hall to set it on fire.
The interior of the old section of City Hall, which opened in 1883, was almost completely destroyed, authorities announced. The roof and bell tower collapsed, and only the modern section of the building was saved by firefighters.
