Mexican authorities found ten bodies on Saturday in the state of Zacatecas, which was plagued by a wave of violence from 2021 through 2022 due to a conflict between criminal organizations over control of drug trafficking routes.
The bodies were found in the municipalities of Morelos, Panuco, and San Alto, though authorities did not specify the motive for the killings or who is believed to be responsible.
Mexico, where gang activity—primarily involving drug and human trafficking—has long been a persistent scourge, has one of the highest homicide rates in the world.
Analysts note that gangs, particularly the New Generation Cartel of Jalisco and the Sinaloa Cartel, continue to clash primarily over control of territory and lucrative as well as strategic drug trafficking routes.
