French authorities have recorded 74 drowning deaths in the country since June 18 due to the extreme heat wave affecting France, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced today in an interview.

These deaths occurred “largely in unauthorized, unsupervised bodies of water: rivers and small lakes, among others,” explained the Interior Minister, noting that there were also “drowning incidents in private swimming pools.”
“There is a phenomenon of drowning, sometimes due to overexertion… We are seeing many deaths from heart attacks,” he added in an interview with the newspaper Le Parisien published in its online edition.
