U.S. President Donald Trump attempted yesterday, Friday, to downplay the impact of the war in Iran on his country ahead of the crucial midterm elections in the U.S.
“Many people don’t call it a war. I say it’s a military conflict, because for us it’s child’s play. It’s no big deal. We did it in Venezuela, and we did this too,” he told reporters in the Oval Office when asked about a comment by his vice president, Jay D. Vance, who had stated the previous day that he would not call the conflict in Iran a “war.”
The Trump administration is trying to downplay the conflict, as the rise in gas prices caused by the war could cost Republicans dearly in the November elections, as they risk losing control of Congress.
President Trump stated that the U.S. is carrying out “sporadic strikes” and “is not at war at this time.” He also claimed that they control the Strait of Hormuz and have decimated the Iranian armed forces. “What we have achieved is remarkable. We have taken control of Venezuela, and, in essence, we also have control of Iran,” he said.
When asked to clarify the term “a piece of cake,” given that 18 American soldiers have been killed since the start of the conflict, Trump, visibly annoyed, drew a comparison with the wars in Vietnam and Afghanistan.
“I don’t think it matters what you call it. What matters is that we’ve had great success. We’ve prevented Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons,” said Donald Trump.
