A Sikorsky S-64 firefighting helicopter, with two people on board, crashed in a remote area of central Utah, while participating in an operation to extinguish a large wildfire.
The helicopter was operating near the fire, which was sparked by a lightning strike on July 27 and has already burned approximately 425,000 stremmata. A total of 632 people and seven helicopters were involved in the operation.
Authorities have not released any information regarding the condition of the two people on board. Access to the crash site is particularly difficult due to the rugged terrain, and the helicopter’s crash also sparked a new fire.
The causes of the accident remain unknown and are being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
