Guterres’ succession: The new Front-Runner, rumors about Holguin, and the candidacy that “failed”

Nicosia rushed to support nuseibeh

Lana Zaki Nusseibeh is the new front-runner in the race to succeed António Guterres.

“I am running for the position of UN Secretary-General because I believe that this moment calls for strong leadership.”
Lana Nusseibeh

A distinguished diplomat and Minister of State of the United Arab Emirates, Nusseibeh, if she ultimately succeeds, will make history as the first female UN Secretary-General, as well as the first of Palestinian descent.

“The people in my region can see what diplomacy and collective effort can truly achieve. And they feel the consequences when they fail.”

This is a candidacy that Nicosia was quick to support from the very beginning, as noted in a post by Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos.

“The time has come for women’s leadership in key multilateral organizations. I have worked with Ms. Nuseibeh. She is an experienced, effective, and distinguished diplomat, with an approach that focuses on dialogue, compromise, and achieving tangible results.”

Konstantinos Kompos points out that, so far, no suitable candidates have been proposed for the position of UN Secretary-General, adding that time is now running out to move forward with the selection process.

Rumors About Olgin

Nicosia’s statement comes, however, at a time when the name of Maria Olgin, the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on the Cyprus Issue, is beginning to surface as a potential candidate.

In fact, Olgin appears to have an informal advantage, in the sense that, behind the scenes, a candidate from Latin America is being promoted.

Nuseibe will present her vision at the UN next Tuesday.

This new development arose because the heavy favorite, Costa Rican Rebecca Greenspan, received two negative votes from Permanent Members of the Security Council, a fact that prevents her candidacy from moving forward.
