Photos published by *Paris Match* magazine showing French President Emmanuel Macron jet-skiing on the French Riviera have sparked controversy in France.
According to the magazine, the photos were taken during Macron’s vacation this past August at Fort Brégançon, the presidential summer residence.
“The last summer at the helm,” Paris Match wrote on its cover, referring to Macron’s departure from the Élysée Palace next year, when his second and final term ends.
According to France 24, the magazine also published other photos of Macron engaging in activities such as foil surfing.
These images sparked reactions from the opposition, with the leader of the Greens, Marine Todelier, stating that while the French are experiencing a “summer of revelations,” “our president is treating himself to a promotional feature on his vacation.”
For his part, Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure argued that Macron is sending the wrong message. “During a heat wave, while France is burning and when many French people couldn’t afford to go on vacation, the president is having fun on a jet ski in Brégançon,” he said.
Senator Pierre Ouzoulias of the Communist Party called the photos “inappropriate.” As he put it, he would prefer to see Macron “in a fire truck helping firefighters put out the fire. That’s where he should be.”
In the article accompanying the photos, *Paris Match* describes Macron’s vacation as “work-focused,” noting that an office has been set up and that “the president spends his days on the phone,” and also mentions that the French president’s schedule includes boxing and running.
