The U.S. and Chinese governments decided yesterday, Wednesday, to extend for two months, until January 10, the trade truce they had declared, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced. This came as Donald Trump personally welcomed his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, with full military honors at a military base near Washington.
“We agreed today to extend the economic de-escalation between our two countries, which was set to end on November 10, so that we have more time to see what we can do on the economic front,” Scott Bessent said in an interview with Fox News.
The announcement came at a particularly symbolic moment, as on the same day, U.S. President Donald Trump personally welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping at Andrews Air Force Base, near Washington, D.C., marking the start of the Chinese leader’s state visit.
The meeting between the two leaders is expected to focus on a range of issues, including trade relations, tariffs, critical raw materials, and the technological rivalry between the world’s two largest economies.
