Iran at the UN: Accuses the U.S. of “economic terrorism”

Qatar's diplomatic efforts continue

Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the U.S. threat to impose new sanctions on the country in a letter to the UN yesterday, Wednesday, describing it as “an act of state and economic terrorism.”

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized in the letter—which he released via Telegram and was reported by Iranian news agencies— that Washington is attempting to put an end to Iran’s legitimate economic transactions with other countries, since it failed to achieve its objectives by waging war against the Islamic Republic.

The letter is addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the UN Security Council, and member states.

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump announced its plans for new sanctions aimed at economically isolating Iran, including measures targeting Tehran’s trading partners.

His administration’s Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, warned that anyone doing business with Iran will face the “full force” of the United States. Washington’s goal is to cut off all sources of revenue for the country.

When asked whether the measures would apply to China, the main buyer of Iranian crude oil, Mr. Bessent cryptically stated that no one should “test” Washington’s resolve.

Mr. Aragchi denounced in the letter that these measures are clearly designed to harm the civilian population by restricting access to food, medicines, medical equipment, energy, and other essential goods.

He called on the UN Security Council and its member states to condemn and reject “unilateral coercive measures and secondary sanctions,” calling on all governments not to implement Washington’s decisions and demanding that the U.S. government stop pressuring third countries to cut off their trade with .

China has already criticized the announced U.S. sanctions, arguing that the “unprecedented economic war” the U.S. is preparing against Iran will not bring a solution but will worsen the conflict and disrupt the global economic order.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, will travel to Tehran today, Thursday, for talks with Iranian officials regarding the de-escalation of tensions and the creation of conditions conducive to dialogue.

As announced by a spokesperson for the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, “the discussions will also address freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the need to return to the status quo prior to February 28.”

Qatar is among the key mediators in the negotiations between the U.S. and Iran aimed at ending the war.
