The tremor, which occurred in the waters off eastern Indonesia and had a focal depth of approximately 120 kilometers, was recorded at 11:31 (local time; 05:31 Cyprus time) 58 kilometers west of the city of Tobelo, which is the capital of the North Halmahera Regency in the Maluku Province.

“I was sitting down to have a cup of coffee on a bench by the roadside when suddenly my seat started shaking. I panicked for a moment because I’m still traumatized by previous earthquakes,” Omar Abbas, a resident of Ternate—a city 114 kilometers from the epicenter—told Agence France-Presse.

The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) confirmed that there is no tsunami threat.

In the vast Indonesian archipelago, seismic and volcanic activity is intense due to its geographical location, as it lies on the so-called “Ring of Fire” of the Pacific Ocean.
