Torrential rains in southwestern China claimed the lives of 10 people, causing houses to collapse and triggering a landslide, state-run television network CCTV reported today, Wednesday, August 19, while tens of thousands of residents have been evacuated from their homes as a precaution.
Authorities evacuated 21,784 people following heavy rainfall in southwestern China, including in the Chengdu and Zigong areas.
Five people were killed in Sichuan Province after rainwater that had accumulated on a roof caused it to collapse, as well as the collapse of a wall during a party held yesterday, Tuesday, to celebrate children’s success on university entrance exams, CCTV reported.

Three people lost their lives in a residential building in Changning County, Sichuan, while two died at a hospital where 17 injured people were being treated; though it remains unclear whether these figures include children or young people.
Sichuan authorities issued an alert this week for heavy rainfall and warned of potential disasters. Torrential rains since yesterday, Tuesday, have cut off roads in the mountainous regions of Garze and Aba, CCTV reported.
Authorities are investigating the causes of a landslide that occurred on Monday at a construction site in Guangxi Province, trapping five people, who were pulled out by rescuers while unconscious, according to CCTV.
