The Manchester Airports Group announced that the personal data of millions of customers was stolen following a cyberattack that affected three British airports.
The cyberattack took place over the weekend, but the group was not notified of the incident until last Tuesday.
The data breach affects 8.7 million passengers who arrived at Manchester Airport, London Stansted, and East Midlands in central England, which are managed by the MAG Group.
The information that was compromised includes email addresses, phone numbers, license plate numbers, and ZIP codes.
“We immediately mitigated the risk”
In a press release, the MAG Group assured that the incident “did not cause any operational disruption” and that “airport operations remain unchanged.”
MAG further emphasized that “at no time were passenger safety or aviation security compromised,” adding that no banking information or payment data was affected.
Responsibility for the cyberattack was attributed to an “unauthorized third party,” without further details being provided.
As the group explained, the attackers gained access to “customer data related to parking reservations, lounge reservations, and Fast Track services, as well as Wi-Fi registrations at the terminals.”
“We immediately mitigated the risk and are working with specialized consultants, taking the appropriate measures to protect our customers and our systems,” the same source stated.
