The announcement of the framework agreement between Israel and Lebanon on a ceasefire is expected any hour now.
According to reports, the announcements—and possibly the signing—will take place today, Friday, in Washington between delegations from the two countries.
The two sides, the reports insist, have been engaged in intensive talks for the past four days, with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Although the fifth round of talks between the governments of Israel and Lebanon was theoretically scheduled to conclude yesterday, Thursday, the fifth round of talks between the governments of Israel and Lebanon, mediated by the U.S., continued today starting at 9:00 a.m. (Washington time, 4:00 p.m. Greek time) as part of their efforts to reach an agreement,” a U.S. State Department spokesperson told Agence France-Presse yesterday, Thursday.
Hezbollah, which is aligned with Iran and opposes negotiations with Israel, denounced a new “flagrant violation” of the ceasefire yesterday, following an Israeli drone strike that left at least three people dead. The Israeli military reported that it had targeted militants from the Shiite movement.
It should be recalled that the “memorandum of understanding,” the U.S.-Iran agreement in principle, signed on June 17, explicitly provided for an end to hostilities on the Lebanese front as well, a condition imposed by Tehran.
