“Significant military presence on the island”: Trump announced an agreement with Denmark regarding Greenland

The History of Trump's Proposal on Greenland
ALPHANEWSLIVE

Donald Trump announced that the United States had reached an agreement with Denmark regarding Greenland, which calls for strengthening the U.S. military presence on the strategically important Arctic island and, according to him, the possibility of U.S. adversaries establishing a military or economic presence there. Copenhagen and Greenland also confirmed the agreement, announcing that it is expected to be signed next week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

In a post on the Truth Social platform, the U.S. president stated that the United States “has reached an agreement with the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland,” which, he argued, provides the U.S. with “permanent control over security and all other needs in Greenland.”

Donald Trump emphasized that the agreement addresses “all of the United States’ many concerns,” while stressing that there would be no cost to the U.S.

“At my direction, we worked with representatives from Denmark and Greenland to ensure that the United States will always have the full ability to dois necessary in Greenland to ensure and defend the security of Greenland and the United States of America,” he wrote.

The U.S. president spoke of an “endless” agreement, describing it as an “agreement of unlimited duration” and asserting that it is a “significant, historic, and unique” development for the U.S.

“We will immediately begin establishing a major military presence in Greenland”

Trump announced that the U.S. will immediately begin the process of establishing a major military presence on the island.

“We will immediately begin the process of establishing a major military presence at a suitable location in Greenland, as there are many such locations,” he said.

At the same time, he noted that the U.S. will work with the people of Greenland on the development and construction of infrastructure.

“This solution is excellent for the United States of America, Denmark, Greenland, and all our allies,” he added.

According to the U.S. president, the agreement stipulates that no adversary of the U.S. will be able to establish a military base, maintain a military presence, or make sensitive investments in Greenland without prior approval from Washington.

“From now on, no adversary of the U.S. may ever establish a base in Greenland, maintain a military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments in Greenland without our explicit written approval,”he said.

Trump also argued that for more than 100 years, U.S. presidents have been aware of Greenland’s strategic importance, but no one had managed to bring about such a development.

“I am proud to be the president who has finally and decisively addressed this very important issue,” he noted.

Confirmation from Denmark and Greenland

Denmark and Greenland confirmed that an agreement had been reached with the United States regarding security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that Copenhagen and Greenland expect to sign the agreement with the U.S. next week, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

“I welcome the prospect of a good agreement for Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, and the U.S.,” she said in a statement.

The Danish prime minister emphasized that the agreement should strengthen common security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic, noting that it would be positive for NATO and Europe.

At the same time, she stressed that it must recognize the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark, as well as the right of the people of Greenland to self-determination.

The History of Trump’s Proposal on Greenland

Donald Trump had previously argued repeatedly that Greenland is of critical strategic importance to the security of the United States.

In fact, he had proposed purchasing the island from Denmark, a proposal that was rejected by Copenhagen and Greenland, with both sides stating that Greenland is not for sale.

The new agreement, as presented by the U.S. president, shifts the focus of the discussion from the island’s ownership status to the U.S. strategic and military presence in the region.

Greenland, an autonomous region of the Kingdom of Denmark, is one of the most important geopolitical locations in the Arctic due to its position, its proximity to North America, and the region’s growing importance to global security.

The region has gained additional interest due to the new maritime routes being established in the Arctic, as well as the competition among major powers for influence in the region.
