At least three people have died so far as a result of the floods caused over the weekend by heavy rainfall in various parts of Senegal, according to the state-run radio and television network RTS.
The Senegalese news agency APS reports that a 25-year-old woman and her 4-year-old son were killed when a wall of the family’s home collapsed in a suburb of Dakar. One person was killed and another injured when a shed collapsed in the city of Matam, in the northeastern part of the country. A building collapsed in the city of Kaolack (in the south), where there are reports of casualties.
The start of the school year in Senegal, scheduled for this week, may be postponed due to the floods, according to Prime Minister Ahmadou al-Amine Lo, who noted that meteorologists predict the rains will continue in the coming days.
The floods are also putting Senegal’s infrastructure to the test, just a few weeks before the West African country hosts the Youth Olympic Games, which will take place from October 31 to November 13.
