An Indian national, who had been missing following an attack on the merchant ship GFS Galaxy off the coast of Oman, is dead, his father-in-law said today.

Herab Karmakar, 30, was an engineer on the Cyprus-flagged container ship that was attacked off the coast of Oman on Sunday.
The ship, with 11 Indians among its 24-member crew, was struck by an “unidentified projectile,” Cypriot authorities announced.
Iran stated that it struck the vessel after it attempted to pass through an unauthorized route despite warnings to correct its course.
Karmarkar’s father-in-law, Vivek Tandon, told Reuters that the company operating the ship had informed him of his son-in-law’s death.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has not yet responded to a request for comment from Reuters today.
Karmakar is the second Indian sailor to lose his life in the region in the span of three days.
Another Indian sailor was killed yesterday, Tuesday, after two ships were attacked while passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
New Delhi lodged a strong protest with Iran, summoning its deputy ambassador regarding the death of the Indian sailor on Tuesday.

Tehran states that it has closed the Strait of Hormuz again following the resumption of hostilities with Washington last week, but U.S. President Donald Trump says the waterway is open to all commercial ships except those from Iran.
