Benjamin Netanyahu stated today at the cabinet meeting that Israel takes Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s rhetoric against his country, emphasizing that the Turkish president’s statements will also be brought to the attention of the U.S. government, while expressing concern over the escalation of threats from Ankara.
According to The Times of Israel, citing sources from the prime minister’s office, Netanyahu told his ministers: “Hardly a day goes by without Erdogan calling for the destruction of the State of Israel. We take these words very seriously, because if there is one thing we have learned from the history of our people, it is that when someone says they intend to destroy you, you must take them seriously.”
The Israeli prime minister added that the issue would also be raised with the country’s American allies. “We will also bring these statements to the attention of our American friends. We are not ignoring them,” he said emphatically.
Recently, Erdogan, along with other high-ranking Turkish officials, has stepped up his threatening rhetoric against Jerusalem. Earlier this month, Turkey’s interior minister called on his country to “liberate” Jerusalem.
The Times of Israel even goes so far as to recall that, during a prayer marking the end of Ramadan in March 2025, Erdogan prayed, saying, “May Allah, in His name, destroy and wipe out Zionist Israel.”
At the same time, U.S. President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly spoken positively about Erdogan, argued last week that the Turkish president might have become involved in the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran on Tehran’s side, because “he doesn’t like Israel.” However, Turkey had given no indication that it was preparing to participate in the conflict.
