Donald Trump announced the reinstatement of the naval blockade of Iran, stating that only Iranian ships and their customers would be barred from passing through the Strait of Hormuz, while navigation for all other countries will remain free.
At the same time, the U.S. president announced that the U.S. is assuming the role of “Guardian of the Strait of Hormuz” and that it will impose a 20% fee on all cargo passing through the Strait, arguing that this amount will cover the cost of the U.S. security mission in the region.
Trump’s post:
The Strait of Hormuz is OPEN and will remain OPEN, with or without Iran. We are reinstating the “IRANIAN BLOCKADE,” as we call it, because it only prevents Iranian ships or Iran’s customers from entering or leaving. All other countries will have fair and free access to the Strait.
The United States of America will, from this moment forward, be known as “THE GUARDIAN OF THE STRAIT OF HORMUZ.” However, for reasons of JUSTICE, they will be compensated at a rate of 20% of the total value of each shipment, to cover all costs required to provide security and protection in this particularly unstable part of the world.
The process and implementation of this plan will begin immediately.
Thank you for your attention.
President DONALD J. TRUMP
