U.S. President Donald Trump said yesterday that he expects talks with Iran to resume within the next week, one day after he rejected the peace proposal submitted by Tehran.

“They want to make a deal, but it’s not the deal I want to make,” the U.S. President told the news website Axios. “We might have accepted it a year ago,” he added.

The Iranians “overestimated the cards they had in their hands,” he added.

According to Axios, which cites well-informed sources, indirect talks between Washington and Tehran may even begin today, Monday, following discussions held (also indirectly) by U.S. envoys Steve Whitecoff and Jared Kushner with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on the sidelines of the UN General Assemblyin New York.

The negotiations will take place with Qatar acting as a mediator, he added.

Trump also claimed that the U.S. military allowed “more than 20 million barrels” of hydrocarbons through the Strait of Hormuz this weekend—a record volume since the start of the war.

When asked if he was considering resuming strikes against Iran, Trump replied that he was “still thinking about it.”

The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump is considering resuming the bombings after the midterm elections on November 3.
