Trump rejected Iran’s offer to reopen the Strait of Hormuz

The U.S. President continues to stir up controversy—he released a map in which the Strait of Hormuz has been renamed the “Trump Strait”

Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal yesterday, Friday, aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz in seven days, according to a Wall Street Journal report, which states that the U.S. President also plans to resume strikes against Iran after the midterm elections—halfway through his second term—in early November.

Last night (shortly before 4:00 a.m. Cyprus time), moreover, the U.S. President (once again) posted a map on Truth Social in which the Strait of Hormuz has been renamed the “Trump Strait.”

Citing sources within his administration, the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump is skeptical about whether Tehran will comply with his demands.

Iran submitted a proposal to the U.S. earlier yesterday to reopen the strategically important waterway within seven days, adding that “the choice now lies” with Washington.

“The seven-day deadline will begin as soon as the U.S. accepts this plan,” clarified Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi at UN headquarters in New York.

The opening of the strait is now at the heart of the conflict between Iran and the U.S., which was sparked by the attack they launched alongside Israel against the Islamic Republic on February 28.

One-fifth of the world’s hydrocarbons passed unimpeded through the strait before the war broke out.

“The measures the U.S. should take are not new,” clarified Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi. He explained that “everything was already provided for in the memorandum of understanding” signed in June by the presidents of the two countries.

“If the U.S. agrees to proceed in this manner, everything will return to the way it was before,” Iranian President Masoud Pezeskian assured during his interview with CBS News yesterday, insisting that “the process will begin the day they accept it.”

In June, Trump and Pezeskian signed the so-called Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which theoretically paved the way for an end to the war in the Middle East, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and laying the groundwork for negotiations on the sensitive issue of Iran’s nuclear program. But each side interpreted the text differently, and the agreement collapsed.
