Trump appointed Jay Clayton as the “czar” of artificial intelligence in the U.S.

He will lead the “Super Intelligence Force,” which will identify risks and opportunities related to AI within 120 days

U.S. President Donald Trump appointed Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Jay Clayton as the government’s “czar” on artificial intelligence (AI), the Wall Street Journal reported Saturday, citing an interview with Clayton himself.

Clayton, who was appointed Director of National Intelligence in August, will lead the White House task force tasked with presenting, within 120 days, the risks and opportunities posed by AI, according to the newspaper.

“The president requested the formation of a team,” which he named the “Super Intelligence Force” (Super Intelligence Force), in order to ensure that the U.S. remains a leading force in advanced AI while protecting American interests, Clayton told the WSJ, adding that “the risk of not being number one is great.”

Furthermore, the task force’s mission will be to submit proposals “to address the threats to our society associated with AI.”

This goal must be achieved “while preventing excessive regulation and regulatory capture by vested interests, phenomena that would harm innovation and competition,” the newspaper adds.

“Regulatory capture” means that certain market players are allowed to set the regulatory rules themselves and collude to maintain their competitive advantage.

Officials told the WSJ that the working group will leave most of the management of risks related to artificial intelligence to the industry itself, while collaborating with companies in the sector.

AI safety has become a major issue in recent weeks, with some researchers warning that those developing the technology believe it could kill people within a decade. Many Democratic and Republican lawmakers have reacted by expressing their concerns and calling for action.

For his part, Trump does not appear to support imposing regulations on AI, saying that excessive oversight could weaken U.S. competitiveness vis-à-vis China.

The working group will include, among others, Vice President Jay D. Vance, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegese, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and White House Chief of Staff Suzy Wiles.
