U.S. President Donald Trump emphasized today his his “great friendship” with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, who arrived at the White House a short while earlier for an official state visit. “President Xi and I have forged a friendship—truly a great friendship—based on mutual respect and the vital interests of our peoples,” Trump said as he welcomed the Chinese president, expressing pride in the relationship between Washington and Beijing. The U.S. President noted that he would discuss “hot-button issues” with Xi, such as “security” and artificial intelligence (AI).

“We will discuss hot-button issues related to security, technology, and superintelligence,” Trump said, using the term he has been employing to refer to AI in recent days. He also said that the two leaders will continue to work together toward a better future and a more balanced trade relationship. U.S. and Chinese officials are working to promote a more balanced trade relationship between the two countries, which includes access to new markets for American farmers and ranchers, he said.

Beijing and Washington must “strengthen their communication,” said Chinese President Xi Jinping, emphasizing, from the White House, that he is in the U.S. to strengthen the friendship and cooperation between the two “great countries and great peoples.”

Xi said he is willing to work with Trump, with whom he has forged a “personal relationship,” to “steer the ship” of Sino-American relations. “We must coexist peacefully,” he emphasized, adding that “competition should be positive, with boundaries.” China and the U.S. “share the responsibility” to advance humanity, he continued, adding that the two countries should strengthen their communication.

“Sincere, ongoing dialogue can foster understanding and mutual trust,” he emphasized. “We encourage exchanges in diplomacy, trade, the economy, and law enforcement,” he added, underscoring that “there is a broad scope for cooperation” between the two countries. He also noted that the armed forces of the two countries should maintain their regular dialogue. On trade, Xi said that “China’s door is open” and that he welcomes U.S. companies wishing to invest in his country.

He also expressed the hope that Chinese companies would be treated “fairly” in the U.S. Referring to artificial intelligence, the Chinese President said that his country and the U.S. are both “major powers” in the field and have “the ability and responsibility to develop and manage AI for the greater good,” as well as to ensure that its development remains under human control and “serves the well-being of the people.”

Panda Diplomacy Xi announced that two pandas will be arriving at the Atlanta Zoo within the next few days. “The giant panda has always been a symbol of friendship between China and the U.S. In a few days, two pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, will settle into their new home in Atlanta and meet the American public,” he said.

The transfer of the pandas to the U.S. was formalized last April, but until now the exact date of their arrival had not been specified. Beijing also plans to invite 100,000 young Americans to visit China for educational exchanges and studies over the next five years. The Chinese president also called for an increase in direct flights between the two countries.
