A new U.S. attack on Iran has been in full swing for a short while now—following Donald Trump’s declaration that the ceasefire had ended. The Iranian semi-official news agency Mehr reported late Wednesday that explosions were heard in Bandar Abbas, the strategically vital Iranian port on the Strait of Hormuz.
There are also reports from Sirik Island, Bushehr, as well as the provinces of Chabahar, Konarak, Sistan, and Baluchistan.
In a post, U.S. Central Command, which is responsible for the Middle East region, confirmed the attack. As stated, “upon orders from the Commander-in-Chief [i.e., Donald Trump], U.S. Central Command forces have begun conducting additional strikes against Iran, with the aim of further limiting its ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
” “The United States holds Iran responsible for the recent unprovoked attacks against commercial vessels and civilian crews sailing freely in a vital international waterway.”.
As CENTCOM makes clear, the strikes are in retaliation for recent Iranian attacks on commercial ships. Airstrikes also took place on Tuesday night.
A U.S. official confirmed the airstrikes to Axios’s Barak Ravid.
For its part, the Fars news agency reported “several explosions heard in southern Iran” around 11:15 p.m. (local time, 10:15 p.m. in Greece), in Bandar Abbas and Shirik.
According to Fars, some of the explosions were also heard from the sea, near the western coast of Shirik.
It should be noted that last night as well, the U.S. armed forces carried out airstrikes on various locations in the southern provinces, prompting a response from the Iranian armed forces.
Power outages have been reported in the province of Chabahar, according to Al Jazeera.
Meanwhile, Mehr reports that Iran’s air defense system has been activated.
The U.S. had informed Israel prior to the attack, Al Arabiya also reported.
Earlier today, at the NATO Summit, Donald Trump had announced “hard strikes” against Iran.
