Ukrainian forces say they struck two Russian natural gas facilities

Target: “Two giants of the Russian natural gas processing industry”

Ukrainian forces announced yesterday that they had struck two Russian natural gas facilities in northwestern Siberia, about 3,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised the attacks for hurting the Russian economy.

Ukrainian Special Forces stated that they struck two major natural gas processing plants in Russia, in Novy Urengoy and in the Purovsky District. Both areas are located in the Yamal-Nenets region, the heart of Russia’s natural gas production.

In a message on Telegram, they confirmed that they “delivered the most devastating blow on Russian soil since the start of the war,” and emphasized that they targeted “two giants of the Russian natural gas processing industry.”

Russia announced yesterday that it had been attacked by a Ukrainian drone 3,000 kilometers from the border, a rare long-range attack that caused a fire at an industrial facility in the Urals.

“An attack by a drone against one of the industrial facilities in Novy Urengoy was repelled. The falling debris caused a fire,” said Dmitry Artiukhov, governor of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.

There were no fatalities or injuries from the attack, he said, calling on residents of the area to “remain calm” and assuring them that “the situation is under control.”

The city of Novy Urengoy was built in the 1970s, following the discovery of a rich natural gas field—the Urengoy field.

For weeks now, Ukraine and Russia have been stepping up long-range strikes targeting industrial and military facilities as well as supply chain infrastructure.

The “Fire Point” group, one of the main architects of Ukraine’s deep-strike operations into the Russian hinterland, claimed responsibility for this strike in the Urals.

Blogger and former advisor to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense Serhiy Sternenko stated that, traveling a distance of 3,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, the unmanned aircraft in question set a “new record.”

This is not the first time Ukraine has bombed Russian areas located far from the front lines. In late July, it had launched drones against remote regions, such as Bashkortostan and Chuvashia.
