Moldova’s Prime Minister, Alexandru Munteanu, has resigned, leading to the resignation of his government as well, according to a surprise announcement he made on Friday.
Munteanu, who took office as prime minister in November 2025, did not provide a full explanation for his decision.
“Today, my term as Prime Minister is coming to an end,” he said in a post on the X platform. “As soon as I realized that I could no longer carry out my term in office in accordance with my principles and convictions, I chose to resign,” he added.
This development poses a challenge for President Maia Sandu and the ruling pro-European Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), which is in its second term.
In accordance with parliamentary procedure in Moldova, Sandu will hold consultations with the parliamentary parties and then nominate a candidate for prime minister.
Munteanu was appointed following the parliamentary elections in September 2025, in which the PAS scored a landslide victory over a pro-Russian rival party, securing a new term to continue Moldova’s path toward European Union accession.
Before becoming prime minister, he had worked abroad for about 20 years, including at the World Bank.
“I will continue to serve my country in whatever position I may assume,” he said.
Moldova, located between Ukraine and Romania—an EU member state—is a candidate for EU membership. It has a Romanian-speaking majority and a large Russian-speaking minority, while political power in the country has alternated for decades between parties that favor closer ties with Europe and those that seek better relations with Moscow.
