Talks between Ukrainian and Russian delegations may take place in September with the participation of U.S. representatives, said Kirill Budanov, chief of staff to the Ukrainian president, on Thursday. He said that Ukraine is seeking to resume talks and considers further developments possible within the next month.
When asked by the Ukrainian media outlet Novyny Live whether this could mean direct talks between Ukrainian and Russian negotiators, Budanov replied: “I’m looking forward to that, yes, and so are the Americans, of course. We can’t do it without them.”
The U.S.-mediated peace talks stalled earlier this year as Ukraine rejected Russian demands to cede more territory, while Washington’s attention shifted more toward the conflict with Iran.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently stated that Kyiv sees room for U.S. mediation by the end of next summer and that ideas have been documented, together with U.S. and European officials, ideas that could be presented to Moscow.
The last round of trilateral Ukraine-Russia talks, with the participation of a U.S. delegation, took place in February. Since then, Ukrainian and Russian representatives have held separate talks only with U.S. officials.
