At least 2,954 people were killed and 16,592 were injured in the powerful double earthquake that devastated Venezuela on June 24, according to the latest—and still preliminary—toll announced today by the Latin American country’s transitional government.

More than 16,000 people lost their homes and 856 buildings were destroyed, according to damage reports compiled by Venezuela’s Ministry of Communications following the double earthquake measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude, which mainly struck the state of La Guaira in the northern part of the country.
