Pope Leo was discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital just four days after being admitted for surgery on his right lung.
The Pontiff left the hospital on foot, accompanied by his attending physicians, and was greeted by a crowd of faithful who had gathered to welcome him.
Before getting into the car that took him to the Vatican, the Pope returned their greetings and paused briefly to speak with some of those gathered.
The motorcade then left the hospital, heading for the Vatican. Upon arriving at St. Peter’s, the Pope passed through the Perugino Gate and returned to his apartment in the Apostolic Palace, from which he had departed on Tuesday to receive treatment at the Gemelli Clinic.
Vatican sources confirmed that tomorrow the Pontiff will bless the crowd that will gather, as it does every Sunday, in St. Peter’s Square.
The decision to discharge him was made following an assessment of the Pope’s postoperative progress and the results of his latest tests.
According to the medical bulletin released by the Vatican, the blood tests and chest X-ray performed this morning showed that his health allowed him to leave the hospital.
“Taking into account the blood tests and the chest X-ray performed this morning, as well as the overall assessment of his clinical condition, the Holy Father was deemed fit to be discharged,” he stated.
The President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, sent a message wishing the Pope a speedy recovery following the announcement that the Pontiff had been discharged.
The Italian president expressed his satisfaction at the Pope’s return to the Vatican and wished him a smooth recovery.
“On behalf of all of Italy and on my own behalf, I extend my warmest wishes for a peaceful recovery and for your swift and full restoration of health,” he stated in his message.
