The senior representative for Gaza on U.S. President Donald Trump’s Peace Council warned on Wednesday of a “point of no return,” should the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas collapse.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is facing a tough re-election battle, publicly rejected earlier this month the final phase of a U.S. plan aimed at ending the war in Gaza.
A resumption of hostilities in Gaza would mean that “there would no longer be a roadmap to return to, there would be no administration to build, and there would be nothing left on the ground to rebuild. This would not merely be a step backward. It would be a point of no return for everyone,” Nikolay Mladenov told the United Nations Security Council.
A roadmap agreed to by Hamas on July 30 stipulated that the disarmament process would be overseen by the International Stabilization Force, a newly formed force expected to be deployed in Gaza once the situation stabilizes. It is headed by U.S. Major General Jasper Jeffers.
Hamas had pledged to hand over its weapons to a new Palestinian governing body, an agreement that raised reservations among Netanyahu, while Trump described it as a significant development.
Mladenov stated that “the second risk [to the ceasefire] is moving in the opposite direction.” Hamas has committed to ending all military activity. This commitment must still be fully honored.”
“Every weapon that continues to be transported, every tunnel where work continues, and every convoy that continues to be blocked delays the process and provides ammunition to those who wish to see the war resume,” he added.
