Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced in his address that early elections would be held on November 29, confirming the rumors of the past few days.
Pedro Sánchez took stock of the progress made during his term in office.
“During this legislative session, we have had to manage unprecedented emergency situations, and we have been forced to work with a particularly turbulent Congress,” said the Spanish prime minister.
The address comes after a series of meetings the prime minister held over the weekend with members of his government and Socialist Party leaders, in order to decide on the government’s next steps.
This was prompted by the government’s defeat in Congress last Friday, when the two legislative decrees he had drafted in response to the anti-government protests that followed the eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal from her home in Madrid.
The Spanish prime minister canceled the rest of his schedule for today.
