Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the courage of the flydubai pilot who was stabbed by the co-pilot, who allegedly attempted to cause thecrash of the aircraft.
“I commend the Indian pilot, Schmidt Machar, for his unparalleled courage. Although he was stabbed and seriously injured, he fought back, resisted, opened the cockpit door, and allowed passengers and crew to subdue the attacker—thus preventing an aviation tragedy,” Netanyahu wrote in a post on the X platform.
“He saved the lives of 174 people, including Israeli citizens,” Netanyahu said, wishing Matsar a speedy recovery and emphasizing that “he is a true hero.”
A pilot who spoke to Israel’s Channel 16 reported that the co-pilot, an Omani national who stabbed the pilot, had been hired eight months ago. “He prayed excessively throughout the day and refused to shake hands with women,” he said of the attacker.
After the struggle in the cockpit and the subduing of the perpetrator, the flydubai aircraft, which was flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv, made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
