Donald Trump appears to have suggested to Xi Jinping that China purchase American weapons, as revealed by the U.S. ambassador to China, David Perdue, at a time when Beijing is concerned about U.S. arms sales to Taiwan.
“President Trump says: ‘Well, okay, we sell weapons to (…) other countries, all over the world,” and “he even asked President Xi Jinping if he would like to buy American weapons at some point,” the ambassador said in an interview with Fox News.
“Discussions are also taking place regarding other sales (of weapons to Taiwan),” he noted, adding that the two leaders “discuss this every time they meet.” He clarified, however, that Washington’s position on the issue has not changed.
The Background and Taiwan’s Military Capabilities
It should be recalled that, in June, China warned Taiwan not to seek “independence backed by the U.S. or through the use of military force.”
Washington gave the “green light” in December 2025 for $11.1 billion in arms sales to Taiwan. The U.S. ambassador stated in his interview that the U.S. government has sold “more weapons to Taiwan than any other president since 1979.”
The U.S. has passed a law requiring every U.S. administration to supply the region.
