Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed holding a summit next month with his counterparts, U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, with the aimnegotiate an end to the war in Ukraine on terms favorable to Moscow, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.
Citing a former Russian intelligence official, the WSJ reports that Putin’s proposal was made during a phone call with Trump on October 9, during which an agreement was reached to supply the U.S. and international markets with Russian diesel.
The Wall Street Journal notes that such a summit on Ukraine, without the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, would cause concern among European leaders and others.
In a post on the Truth Social platform, Donald Trump accused Volodymyr Zelenskyy yesterday, Sunday, of not wanting to end the war in Ukraine, while defending his decision to suspend sanctions against Russia, emphasizing that he wants to keep Moscow at the negotiating table.
“My decision regarding Russia is very simple. I am in the process of negotiating a peace agreement in the war between Russia and Ukraine. And I don’t want to do anything that would foolishly push Russia away from the negotiating table,” Trump said.
After strongly criticizing Zelenskyy for the attacks he is launching against oil refineries in Russia, Trump accused the Ukrainian president of “doesn’t want this war to end and probably never did. He could have secured a better deal two years ago than he has today.”
