At least five people have lost their lives and another 87 are missing due to a fire that broke out on a passenger ship in the western Philippines, near a tourist area in Palawan province, the Coast Guard announced this morning.
“Based on the information we have available—excluding the 42 people who were rescued and the five who died—we still have 87 people who are reportedly missing,” said Coast Guard Captain Noemi Kagambiab on a radio station in the archipelago, explaining that according to the ferry’s manifest, a total of 134 people—passengers and crew—were on board.

The fire has not yet been extinguished, according to the same officer.
