At least nine people lost their lives and many others were injured today due to a fire that broke out at a hotel in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta, the historical and official name of the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal until 2001), a fire department official told Agence France-Presse.

“Nine people lost their lives in the fire that broke out early today,” said the officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized by his superiors to make statements to the press.
Six men, two women, and a child were rescued and taken to a hospital, according to the same source.
