In June, the highest temperatures ever recorded were observed on the surface of the planet’s oceans, due to the effects of the natural El Niño phenomenon, which compound those of human-induced climate change and global warming, according to an announcement today by the Climate Change Observatory (C3S) and the Copernicus Marine Directorate of the European Copernicus Agency.

The average surface temperature of the oceans, which cover two-thirds of the Earth, reached 20.98° Celsius in June, breaking the previous record, which was set in 2024 (20.89° Celsius).The first half of 2026 as a whole is the second-warmest on record, behind only that of 2024, according to the announcement.
