Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s envoy and son-in-law, held talks today in El Alamein with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on the “implementation of the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip,” , a spokesperson for the Egyptian presidency announced.
The meeting “reiterated the need for all parties to respect their obligations under the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip,” the spokesperson’s statement said.
Earlier, the Egyptian news agency MENA reported that a Hamas delegation had met in El Alamein with the head of Egyptian intelligence, Hassan Rashad, to discuss how to advance the U.S. peace plan for Gaza.
The Hamas delegation, led by Khalil al-Hayya, “reiterated its commitment to the success of U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan.”
A Hamas official stated that the talks focused on “efforts to persuade Israel to abide by the agreement, which includes a 15-point roadmap, and to begin implementing it,” and added that the delegation would brief the Egyptian side on Israel’s violations of the ceasefire.
In late July, Hamas approved the U.S. 15-point roadmap, which aims to launch “the second phase of the Trump plan” for Gaza, which calls for the disarmament of Hamas and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Palestinian enclave.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the plan and called for “the genuine disarmament of Hamas.”
Jared Kushner will visit Israel next week in an effort to bridge the differences.
A Hamas source stated that there are “contacts and talks” with Egyptian, Qatari, and Turkish mediators to “persuade Israel to abide by the agreement.”
