The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel for their work in optogenetics, the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm announced.
This year’s prize honors the trio of scientists “for their discoveries concerning light-activated ion channels and optogenetics,” a method that makes it possible to demonstrate how nerve cells shape memories, emotions, and behaviors within the brain,” the Nobel Committee announced.
