A 6.7-magnitude earthquake was felt across much of southern Peru at noon on Thursday (local time), according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The epicenter of the earthquake, which was recorded at 1:00 p.m. (local time; 9:00 p.m. Cyprus time), at a focal depth of 99 kilometers according to the USGS, was located in the province of Parinacotas, in the department of Ayacucho, about 800 kilometers south of the capital, Lima.

The Geophysical Institute of Peru, for its part, estimated that the earthquake measured 7.2 on the magnitude scale and that the focal depth was 108 kilometers. It recorded at least one aftershock, measuring 4.2, at 4:30 p.m. (local time; 12:30 a.m. Cyprus time).

Footage broadcast by Peruvian media shows rocks that fell from hills around Coracora, a town of about 10,000 residents, the closest to the epicenter, in the department of Ayacucho.

Initial reports from authorities indicate three people suffered minor injuries, said Defense Minister Rafael Belauente in a statement to Congress, adding that damage was found in 22 homes, six schools, and twelve medical centers. He added that the assessment process was still ongoing.

“The population reacted, went outside, and took cover,” and “we hope there is no damage that will affect people,” said Mayor Yoni Odon on a Peruvian television network.

The earthquake was felt to varying degrees in several regions, noted the civil protection institute. Media outlets reported that it was felt in the regions of Cusco, Arequipa, Ica, and Apurímac.

Residents of the capital also felt it, as Agence France-Presse reporters on the scene confirmed.

Very strong tremors, measuring over 7 on the Richter scale, struck Venezuela in June and Colombia—which borders Peru—in August, leaving thousands dead, injured, and missing, as well as widespread destruction.
