Aleksandar Vučić’s second and final presidential term was scheduled to end in May 2027; however, yesterday, Sunday evening, he resigned in order to run as a candidate in the parliamentary elections on October 25. According to the Constitution, a new president must be elected within 90 days of the president’s resignation. Shortly before resigning, Vučić stated that the first round of the presidential election would be held in late December.

Ana Brnabić, upon assuming her duties, said she considers it a great honor to succeed Aleksandar Vučić: “I believe we have never had a president like him before, and that Serbia will never again have a president who demonstrates such self-sacrifice and puts everything else second for the sake of the country. It is an honor for me to take on this duty from such a man.”
