Four young men were murdered by gunmen shortly after participating in an amateur soccer match in a rural community in Mexico, authorities announced yesterday, Thursday.
The prosecutor’s office in the state of Guanajuato (central Mexico) clarified that the massacre took place the day before yesterday, Wednesday, in the village of Malvas, which has a population of about 1,500.
AFP sources within the police reported that seven young men, from neighboring communities, were leaving a soccer field after participating in a match when they were approached by the perpetrators—who remain unknown at this time.
After a chase, three young men were killed at the first location, followed by a fourth at a second location a short distance away, the sources clarified. Three others were wounded by gunfire.
The motive for the killings is unclear at this stage. However, this area is controlled by a drug cartel. Guanajuato is among the Mexican states hardest hit by violence linked to the presence of organized crime gangs.
The police carried out an operation to locate the suspects at the scene but did not arrest the perpetrators.
In January, 11 people were killed and another 12 were injured when a group of gunmen opened fire on spectators at a soccer match in San Francisco del Rincón, also in the state of Guanajuato.
