Scandal at the World Cup? New York Times: U.S. red card “canceled” after a phone call from Trump

FIFA grants permission for a player who was sent off in the previous match to play

Donald Trump called FIFA President Gianni Infantino, and asked him to reconsider the suspension of the U.S. team’s leading scorer, Folarin Balogun, following the red card he received during the team’s match that evening against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The New York Times reported this, citing three people with knowledge of the intervention.

And indeed, the intervention was successful: Today, Sunday, FIFA announced that Balogan will be eligible to play on Monday (early Tuesday morning in Greece) against Belgium.

Balagan was given a one-year suspended sentence.

Donald Trump welcomed the decision on Truth Social, referring to a “great injustice” that had been rectified. He made no mention of Infantino or his own intervention.

Balagan was sent off during Wednesday’s match after receiving a red card for a foul on a Bosnia and Herzegovina defender. Because of the card, he would not have been able to play against Belgium.

“In accordance with Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the one-match suspension is suspended for one year,” the federation stated.

“If Folarin Balogun commits another offense of a similar nature and severity during the suspension period, the suspension will be revoked and the penalty will be imposed, subject to any additional sanctions that may be imposed for the new offense,” it added.

This reversal, the article continues, is extremely unusual, as it is the first time since 1962 that FIFA has allowed a player to compete in a match while he should have been suspended.

Gianni Infantino has, moreover, been trying for years to win Trump’s favor. Last year, FIFA established and awarded the FIFA Peace Prize to the American president, while at the same time he was trying—unsuccessfully—to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Balogun’s participation clearly favors the United States, as the forward poses the main threat to the opposing goal, while the U.S. team is trying to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time in 24 years.

FIFA had also bent the rules in the case of Cristiano Ronaldo, who was granted permission to play even though he should have missed the first two World Cup matches due to a red card he hadbefore the start of the tournament.
