On the day of the inauguration of Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriegua, the State Department announced that the U.S. plans to provide $1 billion to Colombia’s new government as part of a security assistance package.
Highlighting the “revitalization” of U.S.-Colombia relations and the deepening of bilateral cooperation on security and economic issues, the State Department states that the Trump administration intends to provide “one billion dollars as part of a security assistance package to support President De La Espriega’s government in its efforts to achieve our shared goals.”
Abelardo de la Espriegia, 48, was endorsed by U.S. President Donald Trump during the Colombian election campaign. He has promised to govern “with an iron fist,” stepping up operations against rebel groups and drug cartels.
