A tanker in the Strait of Hormuz was struck by an “unknown projectile,” causing a fire, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) security information service, which operates under the British Ministry of Defense, announced late Thursday night.
The crew members are safe, though the extent of the damage and any environmental impact have not yet been determined, according to the UKMTO update.
Meanwhile, at least three powerful explosions were heard Thursday night in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa, which is controlled by the Yemeni rebel movement Ansar Allah —also known by the surname of its leaders’ family, the Houthis—which is aligned with Iran, according to correspondents for the French Press Agency.
The SABA news agency, which is aligned with the rebels, reported via X that a “Saudi attack” was underway in Sana’a and other cities across various provinces. In footage from AFP, large plumes of smoke can be seen rising into the city’s sky.
In another development, a military coalition led by Saudi Arabia announced on Thursday that it had intercepted and destroyed four drones launched by Yemeni Houthi rebels against the cityHamis Musait, as well as two ballistic missiles over Hamis Musait and Jazan, both in the southern part of the kingdom.
The interceptions occurred amid an escalation of hostilities between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis —who are aligned with Iran—as the Yemeni rebel movement has intensified its drone and missile attacks against Saudi territory in recent weeks.
