Shocking videos: The moment massive waves sweep away everything in Nepal

Helicopters cannot reach the affected areas due to high water levels

Nepal sent helicopters today to assist in rescue efforts as sudden, severe floods swept through villages in this Himalayan country, claiming the lives of eight people and causing damage to roads, bridges, and energy construction sites in areas near Tibet, authorities said.

Across the border, Tibet reported significant losses, with some people missing in the neighboring Gyirong County following a mudslide at a land crossing between China and Nepal, according to the official Chinese news agency Xinhua.

Water levels were too high to allow helicopters to land in the affected areas of Nepal—Siapru Besi and Timure in the Rasuwa mountain region, which has a population of about 50,000, officials said, warning of the risk of casualties.

There may be heavy casualties or property losses, said Sector Commander Narendra Pariyar. Parigiar urged those living along the banks of the Bote Kosi River in the area to seek higher ground, citing reports that infrastructure construction sites in neighboring villages have been swept away by the floodwaters.

The mudslide on the Nepalese side struck the port of Gyirong in China, Xinhua added, cutting off roads, telecommunications, and power in the Shigatse region, near the border with Nepal, it added, without providing details.

President Xi Jinping called for every effort to be made to rescue the missing, as well as for more robust monitoring and early-warning systems to prevent secondary disasters.

Nepal’s Ministry of Energy stated that 430 megawatts of electricity supply have been affected, primarily from hydroelectric plants, which is more than 12% of the total hydroelectric capacity of 3.2 gigawatts, according to Reuters estimates.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah stated that the police and the army are assisting search and rescue teams.

The Bote Kosi River originates in Tibet and flows into Nepal’s Trisuli River, which ultimately empties into India as the Gandak River.

Last year’s flooding of the Bote Kosi River claimed the lives of nine people, with another 24 missing, as the floodwaters swept away a Friendship Bridge connecting Nepal and China, disrupting trade and transportation for months.

That flooding was caused by the drainage of a large glacial lake in Tibet, according to a regional climate monitoring agency.
