Eleven people were killed when they were buried by an avalanche yesterday in the Russian Caucasus, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations announced today.
The avalanche, in the Bezengi Gorge—known for its mountains and glacier—took a group of 33 mountaineers by surprise, according to the same source.
Images and videos were posted on social media showing a cloud of snow rushing down into this gorge in the Kabardino-Balkaria region.

“Unfortunately, 11 people were killed” and six others were injured, the Ministry of Emergency Situations announced, clarifying that 10 climbers managed to rappel down safely, while the fate of six others remains unknown.
This morning, 56 rescuers participated in the search operation at the site, according to the same source.
The Bezengi Gorge is surrounded by some of the highest mountains in the Central Caucasus, with peaks ranging from 4,000 to 5,200 meters in elevation.
The area is also home to the impressive Bezengi Glacier.
